Matthew Scott Mayes, known to family and friends as Scott, passed away on May 10, 2026, at the age of 65 in Shelby, North Carolina.

Scott was born on April 12, 1961. He was a hardworking man who dedicated many years of service as a Union truck driver with Yellow Freight before enjoying retirement.

Above all else, Scott loved his family. He was a devoted husband to Mary Mayes and a proud father to Robert Mayes (Megan), Casey Echols (Lee), and Kristy McFarland (Adam).He was preceded in death by his father, William Phil Mayes, and his mother, Patricia Ann Gold.

He is survived by his sister, Sherry Allred (Leonard).Scott's greatest joy was being "PawPaw" to his beloved grandchildren: Cameron and Molly Mayes, Eva and Sawyer Echols, and Darcy and Ruby McFarland. He treasured the time spent with them and the memories they created together.

Scott enjoyed life's simple pleasures, golfing with his buddies, and making summer trips to the beach with those he loved most. He was an avid sports fan and spent many years cheering on his favorite teams: the Miami Hurricanes and Carolina Panthers. He was known as a hardworking, loyal family man who kept to himself unless you were lucky enough to be in his circle. To those who knew him well, Scott was steady, dependable, and deeply caring. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

The Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2026 at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 1017 Bethlehem Rd, Kings Mountain, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the church in his memory.
