Maynard Hassel Philbeck
Maynard Hassel Philbeck completed the voyage of life on August 27, 2015 at his home in the company of his loving family. Born November 2, 1933, he was one of 3 children born to Paul and Naomi Philbeck and grew up on the family farm during the post-depression years in the New House Community of Cleveland County, North Carolina. He attended Lattimore School (now Ambassador Baptist College) and graduated in 1951. Upon entering the Navy the same year, he trained in San Diego, California, and after schooling in Bainbridge, Maryland, became a hospital corpsman stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He later reported for sea duty in the Pacific aboard the USS Askari. Upon completing his duties in the Navy in 1954, Maynard attended Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and was instructed by noted American portraitist Edmund Archer. In 1960, he became Art Director for Army Times Publishing Company. Marrying Evelyn Huston in 1961, the couple purchased a home, had 4 children and resided in Washington D.C. until August 20, 1970 when Maynard decided to move back to ancestral land in the Rehobeth Methodist Church community of Cleveland County, N.C. Here, he decided to return to his farming roots and became a commercial chicken farmer until 1985. Maynard was a gifted artist who enjoyed painting landscapes and portraits as well as a writer with several unpublished books including Search for the Sun People, People of the Sea, The Halifax Project, Wilhelm Ernst Felbach and North Carolina Descendants(self-published), plus numerous smaller works. He was a creative thinker, passionate about history, archaeology; stamp collecting, gardening and lover of life.
Funeral service will be Sunday, August 30, 2015 at 3:00pm at Rehobeth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Austin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. Burial will follow at Rehobeth United Methodist Church with Military Honors.
