Naomi Estelle Henkle Stroupe

Mrs. Naomi Estelle Henkle Stroupe, age 105 of Kenwood Rd. went to be with her Heavenly Father Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at Carolina Care Health and Rehabilitation. She was born September 14, 1913 in Lincoln County to the late Frank and Pearl Sigmon Henkle. Naomi graduated from Cherryville High School in 1931, where she excelled as a basketball player, the only girls sport offered at that time. She married Garland Wilbur Stroupe in 1933. She worked at the Carlton Yarn Mill for 47 years until her retirement.

Naomi was first brought to Frist Presbyterian Church as a toddler and continued to be a faithful member of that church until she was taken to Carolina Care at the age of 100. She was encouraged, supported, and loved by her fellow church members until her death. "Nomie" as she was affectionately called was loved by all who knew her from young to old. Her faith in God was an inspiration; and her example was followed by family. Nothing made her happier than having her family gather at her home throughout the years for happy occasions. In addition to family gatherings, Naomi enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and line dancing with The Cherryville Dancing Cherries.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Stroupe; brothers, Glenn and Howard Henkle; and son-in-law, Gene Weaver.

Survivors include her children, Jerry Stroupe (Reita), Jo Ann Weaver, Johnny Stroupe (Brenda), and Janice Howell (Jim); grandchildren, David Stroupe (Cindy), Donna Abee (Mark), Cathy Stroupe (John), Cyntheia Jones, Mike Weaver (Becky), Terry Stroupe (Francine), Rusty Stroupe (Karen), Heather Porter (Joel); thirteen great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; nieces and nephews, Bobbie Jean Gantt and Kay Hallman, Rick Henkle, Bobby Stroupe, and Libby Edwards; sister-in-law, Ann Henkle.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 15, 2018 at 1:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Bill Lowe and Rev. Leonard Bumgardner officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Carpenter-Porter Funeral Home and other times at the children's homes.
