Shelby City Park Shag Lessons
       Shelby City Park will be giving Shag Lessons, Tuesday, January 6, 2015, at Shelby City Park (Gym). All ages welcome. Beginners get regular class instruction plus review sessions and individual help as needed. Class one night a week on, Tuesday. Beginners learn the Basic, Female Turn, Male Turn, Start, Belly Roll. Greater Shelby Community Theatre
       Attention GSCT patrons! Important changes coming soon! Due to unforeseen renovations to the Keeter Auditorium at CCC, GSCT must MOVE their first two productions to another location and CHANGE production DATES for “Midlife” the Crisis Musical and “Greater Tuna”. “Midlife” will now be performed January 9-11 and January 16-18, 2015. “Greater Tuna” will now be performed February 13-15 and February 20-22, 2015. These performances will be held in the Millenium Playhouse, which is located in the old Boiling Springs Elementary School (now the Gardner Webb Communications Studies Hall), 110 S.Main St, Boiling Springs. Friday and Saturday performances at 7:30pm and Sunday performances at 2:30pm. GSCT Season Tickets will be honored as always. We apologize for the inconvenience. Shelby American Legion Post 82
       Shelby American Legion Post 82 will host its annual oratorical contest on Saturday, January 10, 2015. High school students who are U.S. citizens are eligible to enter--this can include students who are home schooled. The local winner has a chance to advance to district, regional, state, and  national competition and to earn college scholarship money. The Shelby Contest will be held in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church on North Lafayette Street.   Interested students should contact their high school principal or Mr. Ludy Wilkie, Post 82 Contest Chairperson, at 1541 Kings Road, Shelby, NC  28150.
Broad River Genealogical Society
       The Broad River Genealogical Society presents Kay Moss: Southern Folk Medicine from 1750 to 1820, January 11, 2015, 3:00pm, at the Neal Senior Center, 100 T.R. Harris Dr., Shelby, NC 28150. Park and enter at the back of the Senior Center. Kay will guide us through a different time in Southern history, a time that the doctor wasn’t a phone call away. She will discuss the early back country medicine kit, the medicinal plants and their uses. She will speak about the early home remedies used by our pioneer ancestors. Kay K. Moss is the Adjunct Curator of Backcountry Lifeways Program of the Schiele Museum, Gastonia, NC, which she founded. She is also the author of several books.
Hospice Cleveland County
       Hospice Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC, will be holding the following events for January-March:
        “Reflections” Support Group - Wednesdays: January 14, 21, 28, & February 4, 11, 18, 2015; 11:30am - 1:00pm. This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one. If you plan to attend one of our groups, please make every effort to attend all six sessions. Registration forms are available at HCC Administration Offices or by calling 704-487-4677.
        “Memory Bear Workshop” - Thursday, January 29, 2015, 9:00am - Noon or 4:00pm - 7:00pm, Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building and Tuesday, March 3, 2015, 9:00am - Noon or 4:00pm - 7:00pm, Kings Mountain Hospice House, 321 Kings Mountain Blvd., Kings Mountain, NC. Participants will have the opportunity to make a teddy bear out of a loved one’s shirt or other article of clothing. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. Space is limited. Please call one of our Grief Counselors at 704-487-4677 to reserve your space.
        “Hospice Volunteer Training Class” is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about hospice care and the services provided to the community. This 12-hour course is free. To get credit for the entire course, you will need to attend all days at one of the times offered. Monday, March 16, Tuesday, March 17, and Thursday, March 19, 2015; 9:00am - 1:00pm or 5:30pm - 9:30pm, at the Hospice Cleveland County Administration Building, 323 E. Shelby Lions Club
       The Shelby Lions Club handed out surplus commodity food to over seven thousand persons during the quarterly food distribution, held December 8-10, 2015. One hundred fifty one thousand, three hundred forty three pounds of  food valued at seventy six thousand, four hundred fifty two dollars was given out at Cleveland County Fairgrounds and other distribution points. The next quarterly food distribution will be March 9-11.
Parents Without Partners, Shelby
       PWP meets every Monday night at 7:00 pm. at the Shelby Presbyterian Church for educational programs and at other times as scheduled for monthly social activities including: dances, plays, and concerts. Piecemakers Quilt Guild
        Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets the first Wednesday of each month from 10:00am - 12:00pm at the Lincoln Co. Senior Center, Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, 511 Aspen St., Lincolnton. We are here to teach and encourage those interested in the art of quilting, visitors and new members are always welcome.        Depression and Bipolar Support Group. Tuesdays 6:30-8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Shelby, NC.
