Relay for Life Kickoff
        The Relay for Life Kickoff will be Tuesday, October 21, 6:00pm at The First Baptist Church Gym in Shelby, NC.
Cleveland County Memorial Library, Shelby
        Phil Weathers, author of a book about the Beatles will be the presenter at this Thursday’s Garden Gate Program at Cleveland County Memorial Library from 12:15-12:45.  He will share interesting stories about the Beatles and the music of the 60’s and 70’s. The public is invited. The Garden Gate on October 16 and November 20 will feature music and stories by Georgiana Wright. On November 6, Ron McCollum, Outreach Coordinator with the Foothills Farmer’s Market will share information about Local Foods and big plans for the Market in our community. Garden Gate Programs are presented at the library every first and third Thursday from 12:15 to 12:45.  Bag lunches are welcome and beverages are served.
Cliffside Day
        Cliffside Day: October 11. Rain or shine. Welcome all past employees of Cone Mills, Duke Power employees and general public. Activities begin at 6:30am with breakfast; followed by flag pole dedication by Representative Mike Hagen at 9:00am. All day activities are planned with singing, children’s events, games. A BBQ lunch will be provided by Temple Baptist Church. Hot  Dogs and desserts prepared by Cliffside Baptist Church. Reasonable cost for food. Crafts and vendors welcome.         There will be a Cleveland County Farm, Tour Saturday, October 11, 9:00am to 3:00pm. $10 per adult and $5 per child (12 and under). Group rates (10 or more) available.         The following presentation has been planned in October at the Neal Senior Center, 100 T R Harris Dr., Shelby, NC.
        Sunday, October 12, 3:00pm - Dr. Melinda Ratchford a North Carolina Humanities Council Scholar will be presenting the Titanic, the Ship of Dreams. She will give a presentation on true facts about the Titanic, and the Carolina connections. She has studied the Titanic for over 50 years, and is a Professor at Belmont Abbey. Everyone that has heard Dr. Ratchford walks away with a better understanding of what actually happened on the Titanic. She is a graduate of Appalachian State University and UNC at Greensboro, and has a Doctorate degree from UNC Chapel Hill.

Casar Halloween Bash
        The Town of Casar, NC will hold their Halloween Bash - Trunk-or-Treat, Saturday, October 18, 4:30-8:00pm, at Casar Park. Halloween Parade is at 4:30pm. The Parade starts at Casar Elementary.  Trunk-or-Treat, Door Prizes, Haunted House, Bingo, Ghost Walk, Live Entertainment, Costume Contest, DJ, Games, Bounce House, Crafts, & More. It’s All FREE!!! Volunteers needed for Trunk-or-Treat. Halloween Costume Drive for underprivileged children in our area. Holiday Gift Galleria, Shelby
        The holiday Gift Galleria is held by the junior charity league to help raise money to provide clothes for children in need. There will be over 60 vendors with all sorts of items for sale. Get your Christmas shopping done early! The dates are Friday, October 31 from 10-6:30, Saturday, November 1 from 10-6 and Sunday, November 2 from 12-4.

       PWP meets every Monday night at 7:00 pm. at the Shelby Presbyterian Church for educational programs and at other times as scheduled for monthly social activities including: dances, plays, and concerts. Mental Health Association of Cleveland County
        Survivors of Suicide Support Group meets twice a month, with a daytime and evening meeting. The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC).  The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Cleveland County Arts Council
        Private or Group Drawing and Painting Sessions with Steven Greenway. Having difficulty fine tuning your 2D artwork? Want to create clear colors instead of muddy colors in your watercolor or acrylic paintings? Stumped by not knowing how to clean up a glaring watercolor mistake? Do you want to bump up your drawing skills with better shading, directional lighting, perspective and figure drawing? Steven Greenway will help you improve your skills and more in one-on-one or small group sessions. These special instructive classes are held at the Cleveland County Arts Council by appointment only. Sessions are 1-½ hours long with individual instruction. These sessions are intended for serious minded artists interested in kick-starting their art career. Bring your own art materials and samples of your work. Steven Greenway has his MFA in Fine Arts from the Otis Art Institute. His experience includes book illustrations, graphic design, teaching, and private art instruction. He was employed as the art director for Clyde A Short and McDowell Technical Community College. Shelby High Class Reunion of 1964
        The Shelby High Class Reunion of 1964 will be held Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11, 2014.  The Class of ‘64 will meet on Friday at 4:30pm at Alston Bridges’ BBQ for a dutch treat dinner then fellowship later at Tom McCoy’s Barn.  On Saturday, October 11, the class will meet at the LeGrand Center for fellowship, dinner and dancing.  Contact Tom McCoy for more information 704-435-1516 (leave message), email or visit the Class of 64 Facebook page.
Burns High School Class of 1974
        The Burns High School Class of 1974 will celebrate its 40th class reunion Saturday, November 1, 6:45-11:00, at the Owl’s Eye Winery, 1414 Metcalf Road, Shelby, NC. The doors open at 6:45pm and dinner will be served at 7:30. There will be a cash bar with wine and beer available. The cost is $30 per person. Dress is casual.
