Oratorical Contest For High School Students
All Cleveland County High School students, including those who are home schooled, are eligible to participate. Contestants will give a prepared oration, 8 to 10 minutes, about some phase of the U.S. Constitution emphasing duties and obligations of a citizen to the United States Government. The prepared speech must be the original work of the student. In addition, students will give a 3 to 5 mnute talk on a topic dealing with the Constitution. The topic will be assigned at the contest, but students will be told in advance what the possible choices will be. The winner of the Post 82 competition will advance to district level, and possibly to state and national levels. The National winners will be eligible for scholarships--$18,000 for first place; $16,000 for second place; and $14, 000 for third place.
The deadline to enter the Post 82 contest is Saturday, December 17th. Interested persons should contact local contest chairman Ludy Wilkie at 1541 Kings Road, Shelby, 28150- e-mail ludy!@shelby.net. The local competition is currently scheduled for Saturday, January 7th. More information will be provided to contestants once they are officially entered.
