Peter “Pete” Marion Mauney, Jr. age 84 of 121 Elizabeth Avenue, died Friday, July 26, 2013. Currently of Shelby, he was born on February 19, 1929 in Kings Mountain, coming into this world with the help of his mother’s uncle, Kings Mountain’s doctor Jacob George Van Buren Hord. He completed his earthly life at Kings Mountain Hospice to be born into his heavenly family by the grace of God.

Peter was graduated from Shelby High School and Mars Hill College. He then served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Upon discharged from the military, he entered Wake Forest College and was graduated in 1955.  Wake Forest University honored him with membership in The President’s Club for his decade of commitment to the university. He was also a member of the Deacon’s Club and an avid supporter of Wake Forest football and basketball.

Upon graduation from Wake, Peter became employed at EXXON- Mobil where he continued his work for 28 years, retiring in 1983. At Exxon he was Retail School Instructor, territory manager of distribution, district manager, and Exxon marketing representative. He received numerous honors and awards during his distinguished career with Exxon-Mobil, including the Distinguished District Salesman Award, in 1960. His work took him throughout the states of North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. He was also a partner with his brothers in Mauney Auto Electric until it was sold and in Mauney Investment Company.

Also surviving are his brother, Jim Mauney and wife Frances of Casar; his sisters Helen DeLois of Scarborough, Maine, Louise Campbell and Ann Williams both of Shelby; five nephews, five nieces, thirteen great nephews, twelve great nieces, two great great nieces, four great great nephews; and special caregiver, Margie Hamrick of Shelby.

Pete was an avid golfer and enjoyed Pro-Am games as well as playing with family and friends. He and a very special friend at Exxon planned golf tournaments weekends in Winston-Salem for retired Exxon employees. He also enjoyed tremendously his work with meals on wheels in Winston-Salem.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, Mamie Ferol Hord Mauney and Peter Marion Mauney, Sr; three sister; Vangie Sauls and husband Harry, Thelma Costner and husband Turner, Kathleen Mauney; and three brothers, Charles Mauney, Hugh Mauney, and Joe Mauney.

Prior to coming back to Shelby, Pete lived in Winston-Salem and was a member of College Park Baptist Church. In Shelby, he was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 3:00pm at Elizabeth Baptist Church with Dr. Rit Varriale, Rev. Jim McSwain and Dan Barrow officiating. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery, with full military honors. The family will receive friends on Sunday July 28, 2013 from 6:00pm until 7:30 pm at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory, and other times at the home.
