On Wednesday, March 6th, Mr. Robert Douglas (Doug) MacArthur, Sr, aged 81 passed peacefully at Atrium Health Cleveland of Shelby.

Born in Forest City on April 23, 1942, he was the son of the late Thomas Evans MacArthur & Violet Aster Hill MacArthur. Robert is also preceded in death by his brother, Thomas MacArthur, Jr.

Doug was a respected owner and operator of MacArthur Roofing and Sheet Metal Company with many years of experience. He was known for his high quality work and professionalism. He was an avid life-long learner and attended North Carolina State University, Gardner Webb College, and Pfieffer College earning BS and MBA degrees. Beyond his professional accomplishments he was a devoted husband, father, and member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. He served in leadership positions as a Deacon in his church communities throughout life. His quick wit and inquisitive spirit made him a cherished and loyal friend to many. Doug will be dearly missed by all who knew him, but his legacy will live on through his family, friends and colleagues.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carol Ann Hovis MacArthur, son, Dr. Robert Douglas MacArthur, Jr. and his wife, Dr. Frieda Menzer of Winston Salem, and daughter, Carmen Elise MacArthur and her husband, Douglas Lane Allred of Jamestown, NC. Also left to cherish his memory are grandchildren, Sarah Paxton MacArthur, Samuel Evans MacArthur, Patrick Lane Allred and Aidan Douglas Allred; as well as several nieces and nephews. Additional family include in-laws Sally and Bill Brackett, Duke and Chloe Hovis, Lynn Hovis, Earl Mace, Heath and Barbara Hovis, and Donna Hovis.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in his honor to Elizabeth Baptist Building Fund. 301 N Post Rd, Shelby, NC 28152.

To honor the life of Mr. Robert Douglas MacArthur, Sr., a funeral service will be held Friday, March 8, 2024 at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of Elizabeth Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Rit Varriale, the family will receive friends an hour prior to the service. Burial will follow the service at the church cemetery.
