SHS selected to participate in E-Tracker Pilot Program
The ninth grade Earth Science students, taught by Ms. Kim McDaniel, were selected to complete this special project and report back and give their findings at a special gathering on Friday, November 1st in the school media center. Phil Bisesi, Supervisor of Residential Energy Services with ElectriCities of North Carolina, conducted the session and engaged the students in a question and answer session concerning their findings. The program was assisted locally by Vallery McCoy, Utilities Marketing Specialist for the City of Shelby Utilities. The City of Shelby has been a Public Power community for over 100 years and serves 7,485 customers. The entire emphasis of the program was to make each student and the community aware of the many ways to save electricity. This is beneficial to the individuals to control energy cost and to their electric provider. Shelby Utilities presented each student with an Energy Efficiency Kit which included: a low flow shower head, 14 watt compact fluorescent lamp, 23 watt compact florescent lamps, refrigerator thermometer, hot water gauge, room thermometer, latex spray sealant, and green filter whistles. ElectriCities of North Carolina presented each student with an LED night-light and refreshments to celebrate the program finale. The overwhelming conclusion of the E-Tracker Program is the immense savings, as well as energy conservation, which can be achieved through applying the findings throughout each home.
