William Reece Helms, Sr., 92 of Sugar Hill Road, Lawndale, passed away
Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Carolinas Healthcare System-Cleveland.

Born August 3, 1925 in Gaston County, he was a son of the late Clifton Odell
Helms and Maggie Mary Moses Helms. He retired with 38 years of service from
Carolina Freight Carriers and was a member of Fallston Baptist Church. Mr.
Helms was a member of the Fallston Masonic Lodge #356, Scottish Rite and
Oasis Shriners. He served in the Navy during WWII and after the war ended
he was in Okinawa, Japan where he received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star
for his service.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jan Helms
and two brothers, John Helms and Joe Helms.

Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Vergie Bingham Helms; son, Billy
Helms and daughter, Teresa Helms both of Lawndale; grandson, Alan Dedmon and
two great-grandsons, Alec and Gavin Dedmon.

Visitation will be 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, Tuesday at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral
Home.

A funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Tuesday at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. David Blanton and Rev. Travis Mull officiating.

Entombment will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Fallston.
