Albert Esley Cabaniss

Albert Esley Cabaniss died at his home in Mebane, NC on Sunday, December 23, 2018, after a battle with cancer. Al was born on May 19, 1945, in Shelby, NC, to Eubert Esley and Viola Thackerson Cabaniss. Al is survived by his wife, C.A. Cabaniss; a son, Scott Cabaniss, and his wife, Jo Ann of Raleigh, NC; a son, Mark Cabaniss, and his wife, Allison of Little River, SC; a daughter, Cydne Mosier, and her husband, Joe of Rock Hill, SC; a step-daughter, Christy Wagner, and her husband, John of Mebane, NC; a step-daughter, Amy Maguire, and her husband, Sean of Orlando, FL; and by 16 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Al graduated from Shelby High School in 1963, where he was in the Latin Club, the Debate Club, the Annual Staff, and the President of the Senior Class. He went on to graduate from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1967. Al became a CPA, and his 51-year accounting career included time with Haskins & Sells in Charlotte, Liggett & Myers in Durham, and Peterson Howell & Heather in Hunt Valley, MD. Then Al got the entrepreneur bug and in 1986 bought a hotel in North Myrtle Beach, SC. He owned and operated the Blue Parrot Inn until 1999. During this time, he also continued to work as a CPA, and served as the tax preparer for numerous clients into 2018.
In 2000, he finally married his best friend C.A., and their life together included stops in several towns until they settled into their current home in Mebane in 2007. Al had a wide variety of hobbies and interests over the years. He enjoyed camping, playing the banjo, cheering on the Tar Heels, attending auctions with C.A., visiting the casinos in Cherokee, and reading sci-fi, military history and mystery books.
Al will be remembered for being a devoted husband to C.A., as they took care of each other in sickness and in health; a loving father, who taught his kids the importance of looking after your family and putting them first; and an awesome grandpa--"Pop" loved coming to the grandkids sporting events and other activities, and hearing about everything they were doing.
Pop will be missed by all of us, but we know we will see each other again one day in heaven.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Cleveland Funeral Services of Shelby, NC. The service will be at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 29 at Cleveland Funeral Services. The family will receive visitors before the service at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
