Catherine Gibbon Tanner died at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock on March 1, 2018. Catchy was born in Charlotte on April 1, 1924, the daughter of Dr. James Wilson Gibbon and Catherine Gilmer Gibbon. She grew up in Charlotte, attended St. Mary's School for Girls in Raleigh, and Holton Arms Junior College in Washington, DC. She volunteered with the women code breakers of the U. S. Army and the American Red Cross during World War II. On November 22, 1950, she married Dr. Kenneth Spencer Tanner, Jr. of Rutherfordton. The couple resided in Rutherfordton until 2000 when they moved to Charlotte.
Catchy was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Rutherfordton and Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte. She belonged to the Junior League of Charlotte,
The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, The Herb Society of America, Wing Haven Gardens, and the Rutherford Hospital Auxiliary.
Catchy was a knowledgeable gardener, accomplished French chef, avid reader, environmentalist, world traveler, and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
Catchy was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her brother Robert Lardner Gibbon, and her sister Mary Gibbon Hallett. She is survived by her son Kenneth S. Tanner III and his wife Kathy of Lake Lure, and granddaughters Katie Tanner of Charlotte and Sally Tanner of Asheville.
A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 408 N. Main St., Rutherfordton, on Tuesday, March 6th at 2:00 pm. The family will visit with guests immediately following the service at the church.
