Eakers Celebrate 60th Anniversary
Peggy and Gene Eaker are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on October 16, 2014.
They met in 3rd grade at Polkville School. Peggy retired with 28 years teaching at Burns High School in Lawndale and Gene retired with 32 years at Fiber Industries, in Earl.
Together they raised five children and later were hands-on with all of the 13 grandchildren. Peggy and Gene were famed for summer excursions tubing down the Broad River with the teenagers, for tomato sandwich picnics, and for homemade ice cream on hot Sunday afternoons. Today they remain very active in their church, Kistler’s United Methodist in Lawndale, and the surrounding community. Travel has been a great joy for the couple, initially hauling the kids, often with friends or cousins in tow, seeking campgrounds at Civil War battlegrounds all around the southeast. Later Peggy and Gene zigzagged across the United States many times, accompanied by a caravan of lifelong friends, and always using the road “less traveled”. The Eaker home today remains a “Welcoming Place” where family and friends congregate for good food, conversation, intense games of Scrabble or Rook, and often the homemade ice cream.
The life stories could go on and on; however, most importantly, Peggy and Gene taught their children and grandchildren life principles by example...integrity, serving others, the value of hard work, to be honest, thrifty and respectful, and the priority of family. Most recent, the Eakers are particularly proud and thankful for their 5 great-grand sons: Jeremiah, Isaac, Micah, Mark, and Grayson David.
