Kings Mountain festival offers, history, music, crafts, food

A full day of activities are planned for Kings Mountain's Gateway Festival, "Music, Muskets, & Merriment" scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2015. This is the 12th year for the day-long festival (10 am -5 pm) , which celebrates Kings Mountain being designated by the National Park Service as the "Gateway City" to three area parks - Kings Mountain National Military Park, Kings Mountain State Park (SC) and Crowders Mountain State Park (NC).
Festival day will begin early at 8 a.m. as runners participate in the Gateway Festival 5K, benefiting the early college program at Cleveland Community College.
Music from the North Carolina Foothills, including Folk, Americana, Country, and Bluegrass will be featured throughout the day at the Gazebo in Patriots Park. Scheduled entertainment includes Bobby & the Blue Ridge Tradition, Timberidge, The Oak Grove String Band, and Locust Honey String Band.
A Revolutionary War battle with live musket and cannon fire and a colonial period historic encampment will also take place at Patriot's Park. The camp will enable visitors to better understand what frontier life was like in the mid-1700's.
A special "KidZone" at Patriots Park will feature a variety of craft and food vendors.
"This year the Gateway Festival is focusing on featuring the great variety of attractions available here in Kings Mountain such as the Gateway Trail, Kings Mountain Historical Museum, Southern Arts Society, Joy Performance Center, and Kings Mountain National Military Park," said Haley Wilson, Main Street Program Special Events Coordinator. "These venues are all featured stops on our (free) shuttle service along with Patriots Park, and they will be having activities available for visitors as they make their stops along the route. Kings Mountain is full of so much history and culture, and it is important to celebrate all we have to offer in our area."
