Take The Step One Challenge

Friday, June 4th marks the completion of the 5th Annual Cleveland County Step One Challenge.  This contest, sponsored by the Cleveland County Health Department and the Alliance for Health, is a community-wide approach to increasing physical activity and supporting obesity prevention strategies for all residents of the county.  Since 2006 over seven thousand individuals have participated in the Step One Challenge, walking over 1.2 billion steps, equaling over six hundred thousand miles.

Participants in this year’s challenge are reminded that walking logs are due back to Anne Short at the Alliance for Health or Henry Earle at the Cleveland County Health Department by 5:00 pm on Tuesday, June 15th.

Each participant who turns in a completed walking log will receive a commemorative Year 5 Step One Challenge Pin.  Every person that logs over 1 million steps during the whole of the competition will receive a t-shirt that says “I walked a million for Cleveland County.”

Walking can be achieved easily by most people, and serves as an inexpensive way of increasing your physical activity levels. Proven health benefits of walking include improved physical condition, improved cardiovascular functioning, increased calorie expenditure, as well as reductions in cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Thank you for being active participants in the improvement of your own health by being a part of the Step One Challenge.  For more information please see our website at www.steponechallenge.com
