What if the same number of people came to a high-school orchestra
concert that came to a high-school football game?

As a community, support for the arts is a healthy way to develop
students’ cognitive, physical and social-emotional characteristics.

Some may ask, “Why music?” or “What does music do for my
child?”

Exposure to music and fine arts is important to students’
development as a well-rounded adult. The arts are essential to
preserving our culture in an ever-changing society. Studies have
show that students who participate in music programs experience
long-term success in life.

Support for the arts and music also have positive effects on
students labeled “at-risk.” I have watched my students carefully
and firmly believe that every student innately is connected to
music despite academic achievement.

Would solidifying the connection to music (joining a choir, band or
orchestra program) increase a child’s success in school?

Cleveland County Schools has some of the best fine arts educators
in the entire state. Let’s take advantage of this and get more
involved in supporting music and the arts. I challenge you
Cleveland County to encourage your children to embrace music as
a part of a balanced education and join a performing group at your
local school.
