2013 Summer Reading Program Encouraged Over 3800 Patrons to “Dig Into Reading
The 2013 Cleveland County Memorial Library System Summer Reading Program was a major success. The seven week program began with a Kick Off event that served over 250 participants. Event sponsors  that encouraged  children ages 0 -17 to “Dig Into Reading” and go “Beneath the Surface”  included Lowes Home Improvements,  The Cleveland County Partnership for Children, The Army National Guard, The City of Shelby Parks and Recreation Department and the Uptown Shelby Association.  A special appearance and book reading was performed by CCML’s very own pirate Captain Jack.  SRP Program highlights included programs presented by The Schiele Museum of Natural History, The Gaston Gem and Mineral Club, KidsSenses InterACTIVE Museum, Time Warner Cable Channel 14, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Ashworth, The Cleveland County Fair LEGO Committee, Mr. Tommy Hatley, Mrs. Laura Zeigler and Clines Nursery. The first ever Teen Tuesday program was held this summer with over 342 youth attending eight programs.  This year also included the opportunity for children, teens and adults to register online @ www.ccml.org. The program gave everyone the opportunity to participate even if they could not attend the onsite programs held at the Spangler and CCML branches. Everyone was excited for the opportunity to earn “Treasure Bucks”, which encouraged reading, by checking out books, checking out wonder boxes, completing the “Incentive Game” online and by solving weekly clues by finding the special Treasure Chest at local businesses and public facilities located in Lawndale and Uptown Shelby. The “bucks” could be redeemed at the “Treasure Bucks Stores” for prizes. Thanks to our Treasure Chest and SRP sponsors, Arnold’s Gift Gallery, Subway, Dairy Queen, Art Blooms, Stage Coach Hardware, First National Bank, The City of Shelby Parks and Recreation Carrousel , The Cleveland County Arts Council, Cindy’s Pet Shop, SPAKE Concrete Inc., The Cleveland County Fair, and The Don Gibson Theatre.  Adults were also included in the fun by registering on line and for writing weekly book reviews that made them eligible to win valuable gift bags from our generous sponsors. In keeping with the theme “Beneath the Surface” two SRP Finale’s were held, a daytime swimming event for children 6-11 and a Teen and Family Night program at the City of Shelby Aquatics Center. Both programs attracted over 365 participants. Over 950 youth were reached by the CCML Outreach Van “Tag-Along-Tales” program where there were visits to 32 sites within the County that were also were included in all of the fun and learning. SRP participants are encouraged to offer their very valuable feedback by visiting www.ccml.org  or by filling out a brief survey available at the checkout desk at the CCML and Spangler branches. Online SRP Surveys may be obtained by visiting the top right portion of the CCML home page and clicking the survey link.
