3rd Annual Rhythm & Roots Run
The 3rd annual Rhythm & Roots Run will kick off Saturday, November 3, 2012 with a live musical tribute to Earl Scruggs who passed away March 28th.  The tribute will be led by Wiregrass, a local bluegrass group, playing “Foggy Mountain Breakdown”.  Scott Lail, banjo player for Wiregrass and avid Earl Scruggs fan said “It is just an honor to be able to be a part of something like this that will pay tribute to Earl”. All banjo players and other instrumentalists that would like to participate can join in Saturday morning before the race.
The event starts and ends at the Don Gibson Theatre and raises awareness for the Earl Scruggs Center: Music & Stories from the American South while providing an opportunity for a local K-12 school to win cash for their PTO.  All youth 12 and under receive a medal for participating and the school with the highest number of participants receives a trophy and $250 cash prize.  Last year, Union Elementary won the award which is sponsored by Plaster Family Dentistry.
Co-chairs Will Plaster and Missy Darnell are leading the planning this year and are excited about the additions to this year’s event.  “Music is an important part of our event! This year, in addition to the live musical tribute at the start, we have added live music at the 5K/10K split and at the post race celebration”, said Missy Darnell.  Tater Family Traveling Circus returns this year to provide live Americana music for the post-race celebration in the Don Gibson Theatre reception area.
The route winds through the beautiful tree lined streets of Historic Uptown Shelby, bright with fall colors.  The 10K continues through Sunset Cemetery passing Don Gibson’s monument and then through the new Sports and Recreation Complex at Shelby City Park before winding back to the Don Gibson Theatre for a post race celebration including refreshments, live music and an award ceremony.
Come join in the fun as a musician, runner or volunteer or cheer folks on along the route!  If you are interested in learning more, visit the newly launched Earl Scruggs Center microsite at www.earlscruggscenter.org or call 704-487-6233.
