American Legion Oratorical Contest
Cleveland County High School students (grades 9--12)  plus Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy students, are  invited by Post #82 of the American Legion in Shelby to  compete in the Annual American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program. The winner of the Shelby Contest will receive a small cash prize and the chance to advance to competition at the district, state, and national level. College scholarships of $14,000, $16,000, and $18,000 will be awarded to third through first places in the national finals. Each state winner who participates in the first round of national competition will receive a $1,500 scholarship. The American Legion will pay expenses of the state winner to advance to the national contest. The winner of the local contest last year was invited to speak before Post 82 and the Shelby Lions Club.
The local contest will be held on Saturday, January 12th, 2013, in the fellowship hall of Ascension Lutheran Church in Shelby. The district contest will be the following Saturday.
The contest will consist of a prepared oration dealing with  some phase of the U.S. Constitution, emphasizing duties and  obligations of citizens to the government. In addition, on the  day of competition, students will be given an assigned topic  and asked to speak on it.
Students interested should contact their high schools or  local contest coordinator Ludy Marvin Wilkie at 1541 Kings  Road, Shelby, NC 28150 for complete details. Each high  school may send one contestant and home school students  may participate. Mr. Wilkie should be notified as soon as  possible if a student wishes to participate.
