Artie Mae Turney, 96, passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Hospice Cleveland County Wendover Facility.  Born in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late Oliver Lenoir and Ella Mae Morris Cooke.  She is also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Woodrow Turney.  Artie Mae was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Cherryville.  She loved to cook and enjoyed the holidays and spending time with her family. 

Mrs. Turney is survived by her daughter, Lynda Thurkill and husband Dennis of Shelby; brothers, Fred Cooke and wife Pearl of Hudson, Sherman Cooke and wife Bonnie of Hickory, Wilson Cooke and friend Peggy of Newton; sisters, Almeta Short of Hickory and Carolyn Craig of Hudson; grandchildren, Angela Thurkill and Ashley Thurkill both of Shelby; great grandchild, Kaitlyn Brooks of Shelby; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Chapel of Cecil M Burton Funeral Home and Crematory.  The Rev. Wayne Kee will be officiating.  Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00pm prior to the service.  At other times the family will be at the home.
