Benjamin Flay Smith
 Benjamin Flay Smith, 84, went to be with his heavenly father on Friday, February 24, 2012 at Hospice of Cleveland County – Wendover.  A native of Cleveland County, born on September 11, 1927, he was the son of the late Flay and Margaret Smith of Swainsville.  He is also preceded in death by his brother Dale Smith. Ben graduated from Lattimore High School in 1944.  . He was employed by Carolina Freight for 30 years where he maintained a safety driving record of 3 million miles with no accidents.  He was an active member of Lattimore Baptist Church.  Ben served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean Conflict.  Ben was a Mason, member of Cleveland Lodge 202, the Scottish Rite of Charlotte, NC and the Oasis Shrine Temple of Charlotte NC.  He was also a member of the Optimist Club in Shelby.  He loved to meet with his friends for breakfast at Bojangles and later with the gang at Bobby Rogers for lunch.  He had a passion for driving cars, antique cars, travel, pocket watches, and a special pet “Ginger” and the late “Pepper.”  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a friend to all who loved him.

Ben is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Lois Hoyle Smith;  three sons, John Smith and wife Jannie of Cherryville, David Smith and wife Kim of Hendersonville, NC, Chuck Smith of Charlotte, NC; two daughters, JoAnne Crowder and Dick of Mooresboro, NC, Barbara Johnson and husband Michael Johnson of Winterhaven, FL; nine grandchildren, Dixon, Dylan, and Dakota Crowder, Cameron and Carter Smith, Hillary and Victoria Slama, Zack and Emma Smith; sister, Marilyn Cooke of Casar, NC.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Besson and his nurse Paula, and the employees of Hospice for the loving care they provided.

A celebration of life service will be held at 3:00pm on Monday, February 27, 2012 at Lattimore Baptist Church.  The Dr. Max Burgin will be officiating.  Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park with Masonic Rites.  The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 6:00pm on Sunday, February 26, 2012 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory.  At other times the family will be at the home.
