Bessie Virginia Stallings Elliott
Bessie Virginia Stallings Elliott, 91, of 235 Mt. Zion Church Rd., Lawndale, passed away Sunday, October 20, 2013 at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby.
    Mrs. Elliott was born in Rutherford County, on August 27, 1922, to the late Tildon Durant Stallings and Lucinda Bell McCurry Stallings.  
    Bessie and L.R. raised their large family on the farm, growing cotton, corn and lots of vegetables to feed their family.  She was well known for being a good cook.  Many young boys joined her sons at the table and when it came time to build her a nice home, those same men came to help, free of charge!  Bessie worked over thirty years as a CNA at Haven-n-Hills Nursing Home and was greatly admired and appreciated by her patients and their families.  She was loved much and will be missed by many.
    She was a member of Mt. Harmony Methodist Church until it closed in 1990; she then attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Casar.
    In addition to her her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband:  Lee Roy Elliott, Sr.; son, Lee Roy Elliott, Jr.; brothers, Clyde Hoey, James, J.T., Reid, and Floyd Preston "Jerry" Stallings and sisters: Lola Johnson, Bertie Lee Smith,  Bertha B. Terry, Irene VanDyke, and Elsie Smith.
    Mrs. Elliott is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law; Jackson and Linda Elliott of Roxsboro, Bob and Hilda Elliott of Polkville, and James and Judy Elliott of Polkville; daughter, Lydia E.  Hamrick of Polkville; brother, John Stallings of Shelby; sister-in-law, Mary M. Stallings of Bostic; brother-in-law , Charles VanDyke of Bostic; beloved nephews, Horace Stallings and wife, Eloise of Shelby and Crawford Stallings and wife, Sue of Bostic ; grandsons and spouses, Mark and Chris Hamrick of Polkville, Jeff and Mayako Hamrick of Charlotte, Doyle and Rachel Elliott of Kazakstan, and Brian Elliott, David Elliott, Ben and Jenny Elliott, Jimmy Elliott and Christopher Elliott all of Polkville; granddaughters and spouses, Sara and Rick Biever of Roxboro, Julie and Tyler Royster of Polkville, Jamie and Kevin Franklin of Cherryville and Amber and Dave Alsobrooks of Efland; great grandchildren, Dustin  Hamrick and wife Annie of Hollis, Garrett Hamrick and Austin Elliott of Polkville, Samuel, Leah, and Lydia Elliott of Kazakstan, Ahna Elliott and Claire Royster of Polkville; Solomon and Caleb Elliott of Morganton, Cheyanne Franklin, Peyton Franklin and Hannah Franklin of Cherryville and Nathan Biever of Roxboro; and many beloved nieces and nephews.  Holding a special place in her heart were caregiver, Joyce Joyce and former son-in-law, Art Hamrick and wife Carolyn.
    The family would like to thank the many Hospice staff members for the tender care they gave Bessie during her illness.
    Visitation: 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Wednesday at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston. A guest register is available at

    Funeral: 3:00 PM Thursday at Mt Zion Baptist Church in Casar
    Officiating: Rev. Jamie Bridges and Rev. Sam Snyder
    Burial: Mt. Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery, Lawndale.
