Betty was a 1971 graduate of Shelby High School.  Most of life, she was a homemaker and worked with her husband at Coates Wrecker and Towing Service.  She enjoyed fishing, gardening, drinking coffee, working with her husband and spending time with her family.  As the oldest child, she was a mother figure in her family whom they could count on for advice and mentoring.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Kay Robbs.

Left to cherish her memory, are her husband of 32 years, Joe Coates; her mother, Alberta Rankin of Shelby; one son, Kenneth Rankin (Sonjia) of Shelby; her step-children, Chinetta Boykins (Frank) of Kingstown, NC and Regina Coates and Arthur Coates both of NY; four brothers, Jeffrey Robbs, James Rankin, Keith Rankin and Kevin Rankin all of Shelby; two sisters, Shirley Robbs and Mary Huskey (Ricky) both of Shelby two grandchildren, Kenzonia Rankin and Katrinka Rankin; eight step-grandchildren; one uncle, Bobby Joe Rankin of Shelby; four aunts, Mary Ann Hargro, Annie Brown, Jessie Raney and Betty Sutton all of Shelby; three nieces, Donesha Rankin, Wyshena Rankin and Wykeisha Rankin all of Shelby; a nephew, Marickeyo Huskey of Shelby; a special great niece and nephew, Jala Rankin and Darius Lowe; two special friends, Becky Smith of Lawndale, NC and Annie Shear of Shelby and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at 3:00 PM at Ellis Chapel Baptist

with Elder Annie Shear delivering the eulogy.  Burial will take place at Ellis Chapel Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends from 2:30 until 3:00 PM at the church on Sunday. Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloes.net.  Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
