Betty Thompson Miller

Mrs. Betty Thompson Miller, 77, of 602 Park Ave. Shelby, NC departed this life on Monday, November 10, 2014 at her residence.  She was born on December 3, 1936 in Blacksburg, SC to the late Reuben and Lily Montgomery Thompson.

Betty was a devoted member of Young’s Grove Baptist Church where she joined at an early age.  She was recognized as the mother of the church and served diligently through the years as former president of the Mix Choir, Missionary President, kitchen committee member and she attended Sunday school faithfully.  In addition to her church activities, Betty was a former president of the Thompson Family Reunion committee and active with her Community Crime Watch.

Betty was retired from Hoechst Celanese, formerly Fiber Industries, where she was employed approximately 30 years.  She was also formerly employed with Spectrum, Cleveland Memorial Hospital and Peak Resources where she served as an activity director.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Miller, Sr.; a brother, Neapolitan Thompson; two sisters, Elizabeth Jones and Hattie Wolfork and a great grandchild, Caillyb Leanordo Miller.

Left to cherish fond memories of her are four sons, Eugene Miller, Jr. (Cora) of Shelby, Landrum Miller (Robin) of Suffolk, VA, Andrei Miller (fiancee’, Jacqueline Brooks) and Derrick Miller (Linda) of Shelby; six brothers, Dean Thompson (Marie) of Colorado Springs, CO, Dr. Henry Thompson (Betty) of North Brunswick, NJ, Robert Thompson (Lola) of Shelby, Floyd Thompson of Boston, MA, Larry Thompson (Nancy) of Gaffney, SC and Norris Thompson of Blacksburg, SC; three sisters, Beatrice Washington (Joe) of Queens Village, NY, Phyllis Ellis (Freddie) of Gaffney, SC and Peggy Davidson (Rev. Freddie) also of Gaffney; thirteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; one aunt, Nettie Parker of Blacksburg, SC; sister-in-law, Virginia Thompson of Lawndale, NC; brother-in-law, Nathanial Wolfork of Queens Village, NY; special friends, Annie Mae Littlejohn, Mickey Corry, Pat Maddox and Dr. Rev. Larry Brooks, who was also her pastor.  In addition, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also will cherish her memory.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at Young’s Grove Baptist Church in Blacksburg, SC at 3:00 PM with Dr. Michael Hull officiating and Rev. Dr. Larry Brooks delivering the eulogy.  Burial will take place at the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:30 PM until 3:00 PM on Sunday and at other times at her home.
