Bible Study: Use Emphasis - Jesus Did!
Preachers should speak with meaning. You don’t have to shout every word you say, but do something to get the attention of the congregation. Some use a motion of the hand. Sometimes just a pause will help. I have walked down the aisle through the congregation and spoken directly to one or another. Challenge your congregation. Some pastors today will just read something that was written last week. I tried that once back in 1947 and promised God that I would never do it again. Preachers should be reading a good Bible and asking their congregation to bring their own Bibles to church. Let them follow what you say in their Bible. It’s a proven fact that this way will get the job done that the Lord has called you to do.
My wife and I were visiting a church and I thought the preacher was doing a fine job so I said “Amen”. He lost his place in his sermon and finally got back to somewhere, even if it wasn’t where he should have been. If God did not call you to preach, STOP! Let the Lord’s chosen do the work. I have seen a preacher stop in the middle of a sermon and say, “Lord, forgive me of my many sins,” and then start back preaching. If you are truly saved and you start to do something wrong, your Savior will remind you that it is wrong and you had better not do it. If you have a sermon to do and you know there is unconfessed sin in your life, you should be repenting before you even begin that sermon so that you can have God giving you the words to say.
Jeremiah 1:5 says “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” God knew how He would use Jeremiah before He was even born and went on to say He had put His words in Jeremiah’s mouth. That’s what He does for preachers today. The message is from God. Preachers are just the vessels. Memorized group reading is good, but it’s not enough for salvation and it’s not enough to be a preacher. You have got to be convicted of your sins, repent and accept Jesus as your Savior to be saved. You have got to let God use you and speak through you to be a preacher. When you hear people say, “the preacher really got hold of me today,” you know that the preacher has allowed the Holy Spirit to move through him and brought about conviction. Preachers should challenge their congregation and use emphasis. When you get their attention, they get the message.
