C. Rush Hamrick, Jr.

C. Rush Hamrick, Jr. age 95, formerly of Shelby, died Monday, May 15, 2017 at The Foley Center of Chestnut Ridge in Blowing Rock. Born in Shelby on September 18, 1921, he was the son of the late Charles Rush and Gordia Grice Hamrick. He was retired after 40 years with Kendall Wholesale Drug Co. Business record included: president of Federal Wholesale Drug Association, Traveling Men's Auxiliary and TMA Foundation of North Carolina Pharmaceutical Association, and South Atlantic Drug Club.

He has served in boards of National Wholesale Druggist Association, Shelby Seamless Hosiery, Cleveland Federal S & L, Abuse Prevention Council, Shelby Community Concert Association, Florence Crittenden Home in Charlotte, North Carolina Citizens Committee for Better Schools and Gardner Webb University advisory. Rush was President and Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis, local treasurer for 30 years. He had been president of Greater Shelby Chamber of Commerce, Shelter Home of Cleveland County, United Way, and Cleveland County Memorial Library. He was Jaycees' "Young Man of the Year" in 1948 and Lions' "Citizen of the Year" in 1968. He had been a deacon in Shelby First Baptist Church, associated with children's Sunday School for over 20 years, and a member of the late Hale Bryson's Men's Sunday School Class. Educated in the Shelby Public Schools and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he had life memberships in the Chancellors Club, General Alumni Association and the UNC Education Foundation.

In addition to his parents, Rush is preceded in death by his wife, Grace G. Rutledge of Yadkinville who died June 13, 2000, and a brother, James Bly Hamrick and second wife, Charlene Bartholomew Hamrick.

Rush is survived by two sons; Charles Rush "Rusty" Hamrick, III, of Blowing Rock, and Dr. Dale Rutledge Hamrick and wife Cherrie of Blowing Rock; two grandsons, Charles Rush "Charley" IV and wife Christine of Sullivan's Island, SC, and George Blanton Hamrick and wife Ebony of Wilmington; a step granddaughter, Allison Verling of Boone, also 9 great grandchildren, and one brother, Gordon Grice Hamrick of Shelby; two nieces, Mary Moore Hamrick of Washington, D. C. and Dorothy Sloan and husband Stuart of Huntersville.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 12:00 pm with Rev. Tony Tench officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in Dover Activity Building. Private burial will be held at Sunset Cemetery.

The family would like to thank his personal caregivers, Chubby Craig, Bonnie Carter, Patty Beam, and the staff at The Foley Center in Blowing Rock.
