Cal T. Pass, Sr.

Mr. Cal T. Pass, Sr. 89 of 404 Hudson St. Shelby, NC departed this life on Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby.  He was the youngest and the last surviving child born to the late Rev. Norris and Bessie Scott Pass.  He was born on March 29, 1924 in Cleveland County, NC.

Cal was a graduate of Cleveland High School where he was an outstanding athlete playing both basketball and softball.  In addition to playing in school, he was a member of the legendary black softball team, the Bo Weevils.  Legend has it, that he once hit a softball at least 600 feet during a game.  After graduating from Cleveland High, he furthered his education at Johnson C. Smith University where he graduated from in 1949. 

After college, Cal began a teaching career at Compact High School in Kings Mountain, NC where he taught for over 11 years and also coached basketball.   In 1961, he relocated to Summit, NJ where he worked in retail at Roots Haberdakere until he retired.  While living in Summit, he joined Fountain Baptist Church where he served as an usher and was a credit union board member at the church.  He also served as a community servant helping to transport members of the congregation to various appointments.  In 1998, he returned to Shelby and rejoined Durham United Methodist Church. 

In addition to his church membership, Cal was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity for over 60 years.  He was also an avid sports enthusiast, attending sporting events and viewing games on television.

In 1951, he married the former Mary Alice Dillingham and to this union one child was born, Cal T. Pass, Jr. He later married the former Alma Marie Cannedy in 1969 and they remained married until his passing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Ted Pass, Norris Pass and Thurman Pass   and three sisters, Edith Pass Hopper, Johnsie Pass McCombs and Leona Pass.

Left to cherish fond memories of him are his wife of 43 years, Alma Marie Pass; one son, Cal T. Pass, Jr. (Mary) of Shelby; three grandchildren, Kendra Nicole Lewis of Dallas, NC and Aja Lynette Pass and Cal Theodus Pass both of Shelby; five great-grandchildren, Xavier Spriggs, Bryce Cobb, Maraja Pass, Cal Theodus, Pass, Jr. and Cal Treylen Pass; his nieces and nephews, Monte Pass of Santa Monica, CA, Janet Pass of Shelby, Charlene Morgan of Atlanta, GA and Linda Pass Fowler (John) of Atlanta, GA; a brother-in-law, Norris Cannedy (Marie) of Philadelphia, PA and a host of great-nieces and nephews and friends.

 

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at 11:30 AM at Durham United Methodist Church with Pastor Aldana Allen officiating.  Burial will take place at Philadelphia United Methodist Church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 11:30 AM.  Condolences can be expressed online at www.enloe.net.  Enloe Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements..
