“Be the change you want to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi

In the 1970s, soldiers returning home with torn bodies and weary minds did not receive the welcome they deserved in a divided nation. If you talk to a Vietnam War veteran, they will tell you exactly what it was like. Then, music was a message of power. The song was a way to inform the public and inspire change. The role of music took on more than that of entertainment and evolved into political platform for the underdog, the workingman, and everyone in between.
America is no stranger to government turmoil. In fact, upheaval is how we got started in the first place. The beauty of freedom in this country lives with the adage, “If you don’t like it, change it!” Sure, some may say their vote doesn’t make a difference, but your voice can make a difference. Just because the rest of the world may not agree with you, you still have freedom of speech. LET’S DO SOMETHING CRAZY! Let’s use freedom of speech to make our country a BETTER place. Try to say encouraging things to our neighbors and show kindness to strangers. See if it makes a difference in your life.
The next time you see a soldier or a veteran, think about thanking them for the sacrifices they made and the losses the suffered for our country. Or the next time the person in front of you isn’t going fast enough on the highway, instead of getting close to their bumper, consider that they may be permanently disabled from a war that secured your freedom to drive on that road. As soldiers establish homes and live this New Year in the United States, tell them how much you appreciate their service to the country. Happy New Year!
