"Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music" - Sergei Rachmaninov

The endless world of music…

Sometimes I look back and wonder, “How did I get so involved in music?” Although, my parents were not necessarily musical people, music was always cherished in our family. A cosmic force inexplicably beckoned me in this direction; I had no choice. Maybe it was the concept that music encompasses all cultures, races, and creed.

Just think about the sustainability of music. For every song you learn or hear, there must be at least another song being created for the first time. You could spend your whole life trying to learn about everything in the world of music and still never yet have scratched the surface. It is a personal quest or journey to find what touches you.

You may want to start with some music you may have never heard. It’s like mama used to say, “You don’t know if you like until you try it!” Have you ever listened to the sweet Caribbean sounds of Calypso music? If not, try a little Harry Belafonte, who wrote the famous song “Banana Boat (Day-O)” from the movie “Beetlejuice”. Remember the helicopter scene “Apocalypse Now” starring Marlon Brando? That piece of music is by the famous 19th century opera composer Richard Wagner (pronounced Vog-ner). Did you know that there is a traditional ensemble of instruments including gongs, xylophones, metallophones and drums from Indonesia called a Gamelan?

If you are settled and comfortable with your musical tastes, you just might be missing out. Many times, musicians or writers find themselves at in a ‘writer’s block,’ or they may be looking for the next step to their musical pursuit. I encourage you to be open-minded and explore sounds that are out of your comfort zone.
