Chancey Pennell Roberts, 92, passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Carolina Care in Cherryville.  Born in Alexander County, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe Lee and Omie Mae Davidson Pennell.  She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Roberts, Jr; son, Wayne Roberts; brother, Buford Pennell; maternal grandmother, Granny Davidson; and an infant sister.  Chancey started her career with J. P. Stevens in the Cleveland Cloth Mill.  Then she went to work for Union Trust and retired from Ashbrook High School as the school secretary.  Chancey was a devoted member of Elizabeth Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, worked with the youth and was the director of the youth Sunday school class.  She loved antiques, music and flowers.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by her children, Yvonne Roberts Lewis of Wilmington, Jenny Roberts Moser and husband Gene of Wilkesboro, Robert E. Roberts, III and wife Bede of Shelby, Gail Roberts Stamey and husband Robert of Newton; brother, Shuford Pennell of Holden Beach; sister-in-law, Becky Roberts Freeman and husband Lee of Concord; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Elizabeth Baptist Church.  Dr. Rit Varriale will be officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00pm prior to the service in the sanctuary.
