Charles "Steve" Daves

Mr. Charles "Steve" Daves, age 73 of Shelby, NC, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at Wendover Hospice House. Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Friday, May 29, 2015 at Beaver Dam Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Paul Sorrells and Rev. Joe Edwards. A visitation will be held from 1:00 - 3:00 pm prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, best friend, and the love of his life for 51 years, Ercell (Robertson) Daves of the home, three children, Traci Self and husband Keith of Boiling Springs, NC, Jeff Daves of Boiling Springs, NC, and James Daves of Gastonia, NC, four grandchildren, Jeffrey Daves and wife Bailey of Hawaii, Stephen Daves of Boiling Springs, NC, Shyanne Daves of Boiling Spring, NC, and Kayla Daves of Inman, SC, a step grandchild, Luke Galloway of Shelby, NC, two great grandchildren, Jaelyn and Addie Daves of Hawaii, a brother, Ted Daves and wife Rose Ann of Boiling Springs, NC, two sister-in-laws, Ann May of Durham, NC, and Louise Watterson of Greensboro, NC, two brother-in-laws, Robert Robertson and wife Sandy of Farmers Branch, TX, and Bobby Robertson and wife Yvonne of Carolina Beach, NC.
Born May 26, 1942 in Cleveland County, Mr. Daves was the son of the late Charlie and Mozelle (Greene) Daves and was preceded in death by two brother-in-laws, Charlie Watterson and David May.
Steve graduated from Boiling Springs High School in 1960. He graduated from Gardner Webb College in 1962 where he was a member of the men's basketball team. In 1965, he received a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics from NC State College. After college, Steve served proudly in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968 where his work was published in a Metallurgy Research Manual. After the military, he worked and retired from PPG Industries after more than 34 years. After his retirement, he worked part time as a math instructor at Cleveland Community College. Steve was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. He will be remembered as a "gentle giant" because of his kind spirit and caring heart. He found good in every person, loved his family, and beyond that loved his Lord and Savior. He was an avid golfer and loved playing with the Cleveland County Senior Golfers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Men on Mission, 123 Beaver Dam Church Road, Shelby NC 28152.
