City Park to Host Three Youth Baseball State Championships

Shelby City Park will host three Tar Heel Leagues Boy's Baseball State Tournaments July 16th through 19th. These tournaments will feature 3 Shelby host teams and combine to have 24 teams with some 380 players and coaches participating in the 4-day events. The tournaments consist of eight Little Tar Heel; eight Junior Tar Heel, and eight Senior Tar Heel teams from across the state.
Several hundred spectators are expected to be on hand daily through the Sunday championship games. There will be a total of 42 games played at both the Ballfield Complex and the Recreation and Sports Complex.
Opening ceremonies for all teams will be held on Thursday, July 16th at 2:00pm at the Sports Complex.
For the fourth consecutive year Tar Heel Leagues have chosen Shelby City Park as a State Tournament host, and the local motels will be booked to the maximum with hundreds of rooms reserved for teams and families. These teams will come from all across the state from the coast to the mountains and also will patronize our restaurants and businesses.
David Fisher, Parks and Recreation Programs Superintendent commented "there are a lot of families across the state looking forward to returning to Shelby for the State Tournament this year. The excitement and enthusiasm during the games on the faces of the players and coaches is what makes this so very special."
Charlie Holtzclaw, Parks and Recreation Director, said "we view this as over 360 families visiting Shelby and would like to invite everyone in the community to come out and display the local hospitality that we are very well known for."
Names of the communities represented in the State Tournaments along with brackets will be available soon as local District Tournament winners are determined. For all tournament information and updates visit www.cityofshelby.com/parks
