Cross Words: A Strange Collection
“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.  He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things - and the things that are not - to nullify the things that are, so that no one can boast before Him” (1 Cor. 1:27-28).
Whether picking presidents or prophets, heroes or hall of famers, men most always are drawn to the wisest, the tallest, the most powerful, the most handsome, the strongest.  We seek out those who stand out in a crowd.  Character often taking a back seat.
The Israelites picked Saul to be their first king because, “he was a head taller than any of the others” (1 Samuel 10).  God on the other hand picked a little shepherd boy named David.  The world picked Zeus, the most powerful of all the Greek gods.  God chose Zacheus, a half pint tax collector.  The world picked Caesars to rule over them.  God selected Simon to take charge of His church. Adam and Eve picked Satan to hear. God said listen to my Son.
God rarely uses the brightest and most talented to carry out His purposes on earth. Too often they get the credit because of their abilities.  God rather scrapes the bottom of the barrel for His servants so that no one mistakes who has done what. He doesn’t want the world to see them.  He wants the world to see Him.
God finds His masterpieces not in museums but rather in morgues.  He uses those whom the world has given up for dead.  God seeks out His treasures not in temples but rather in trash heaps.  He shines brightest by using those the world has discarded.
Most amazing, God chose me.
