Cross Words: Jesus Today
Before anyone gets their theological shorts in a bind, I am fully aware and completely convinced that Jesus will not set foot on this earth again until its final days. However, hypothetically, what if He did come back during our present day? Would we recognize Him? Not by His physical appearance but rather by His actions. He might not appear as we think He would or as many Christian leaders act today. The following is a list of dos and don’ts I would suspect of the Savior in our present time.
I don’t believe He would be campaigning for conservative Republicans. Frankly I don’t think He would have much interest in politics in general. The Jews of His day wanted Him to be the ‘Grand Poobah’ of Israel but He declined by stating vehemently “My kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36).
I doubt you would find Him among the picketers carrying signs and heaping words of condemnation at a Gay Pride rally. He instead would use His time visiting, healing and sharing the Gospel with AIDS patients throughout our nation’s hospitals.
You wouldn’t spot Him bombing or protesting an abortion clinic. He would be on His knees praying that the souls of those would-be mothers would be moved to the point that they might seek an alternative choice.
He wouldn’t accomodate Himself in the finest hotel suites or within the walls of enormous estates. His first time around He had no definitive place to lay His head, for Heaven was His real home. He’d use His mortgage or lease payment to feed and clothe the poor who He would be walking among on the streets.
It would be foolish to believe He would be rubbing elbows with the ‘elite’ of society or kissing the rings of kings and heads of state.
He considers the so-called least among us to be just as important as any other human being.
His messages from the pulpits of churches would not be filled with judgemental, hateful words against non-believers. “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him” (John 3:17).
We Christians seem dumbstruck that the Jews of Jesus’ time didn’t recognize Him for who He was, what with the miracles He perfomed and the prophecies He fulfilled. But I wonder sometimes if we would recognize Him if He were around today.
