David Lee is Shelby Christmas Parade Grand Marshall
Celebrating the holidays with the New Christmas Harmonies theme for 2010, Uptown Shelby Association has named Shelby native David Lee Grand Marshall for the 2010 Shelby Christmas Parade. Lee has been a musical leader on many fronts since he began writing songs in the 1950’s as a teenager between working on local farms, time in church and at local events where singing and playing music were a part of everyday life. He worked as a songwriter, performer, producer, preacher, record label entrepreneur and record store owner in addition to holding steady jobs and raising a family.
In his spare time he founded Washington Sound, a record store that supplied the community with Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Gospel and even the best of classic country music of the day. He also founded three Shelby-based record labels: Impel, SCOP (and SCOP Gospel), and Washington Sound.
“David Lee represents a life of hard-earned achievement in the music that was the soundtrack to many lives growing up in Shelby during the 60’s and 70’s,” noted Wade Nichols, Executive Director. “We wanted to celebrate the New Harmonies exhibit now on display at the Don Gibson Theatre and learned about David Lee’s great contributions to local and national music through some concerts and appearances this fall. What a great way to recognize Mr. Lee’s own work and help bring back memories of the music and the people who worked with him to bridge all kinds of styles and traditions.”
In October David Lee’s groundbreaking work was recognized with the Heritage Bridge Award at the Art Of Sound festival in Shelby. And in early November Mr. Lee gathered several old friends to perform and speak at “Said I Had A Vision” to celebrate the release of a compilation recording on 78 vinyl by Paradise of Bachelors. There were performances by original members of the Constellations, as well as the Melleraires who sang an upbeat but soulful gospel music.
The 2010 Shelby Christmas Parade will be held on Sunday, Decemberr 19th at 3 p.m. on Lafayette Street. The deadline for entries is December 10th, but late entries are accepted until Friday, December 17th with a late fee of $20.
