Doris was born in Cherryville, NC on October 7, 1929 to W. Cone Carpenter Sr. and Jane Daugherty Carpenter.
She was a 1947 graduate of Cherryville High School, and later received her Registered Nursing License from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte NC. She took her State Board exam in Raleigh NC where she placed in the top 5 percent of her graduating class. She was a member of the Mercy Alumni Association in North Carolina.
In 1964 She married Walter (Bubba) Crawford and moved many times due to his military career, working in several hospitals around the country, finally coming to Alamogordo, NM in 1969 where she worked at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital as an ER nurse. She later worked at the New Mexico School for the Visually Impaired where she concluded her nursing career.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister who gave so much to all who knew her. She was strong in her faith, and cared for all of her sisters and brothers, sons and grandchildren to whom she gave all that she was and all that she could. There was not a more caring person than Doris; she always put her family above all else.
She is survived by her two sons: Noel D. Durham of Las Cruces, NM and William Durham (Sharon) of Alamogordo, NM and her grandchildren Daniel Durham of Las Cruces, NM, Jon Michael Durham (Cathy) and their children Gabriella, Alexis and Donovon of Alamogordo, NM, Joshua S. Durham (Loni) and their children, Joshua, Savannah, and Haley of Tularosa, NM, Devin Lightfoot of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Also included in her surviving family are her brothers Cone Carpenter Jr. and Carroll Carpenter and her sisters Jane Ann Carpenter, Shirley Hood, and Elaine Neal.
Cremation has taken place, and at her request, a private family service will be held at a later date.
The Durham family has entrusted the care of their loved one to Alamogordo Funeral Home.
