Doris Hankins Kiger

Doris Hankins Kiger, age 86, of Shelby, NC, passed away January 14, 2015 at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center in the EbbTide /Hospice Suite. Doris was born August 29, 1928 in Lanett, Alabama to the late Otis Hammond Hankins and the late Thelma Cagle Hankins.

Doris grew up in Lincolnton, NC and eventually moved to Shelby, NC with her husband Bob after he finished Pharmacy School at UNC. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert W. (Bob) Kiger. They were happily married for 58 years. He was truly the greatest joy of her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Kristi Kiger and her spouse Deb Kovalycsik. She is also survived by her sister Eloise Bolick, nieces Susan McNeill and Sparkle Sparks and nephews James Wyatt, Bill Kiger and Mac McNeill.

She was also predeceased by her brother, Col. Clinton Sparks.

Doris was a very active member of her community. She and Bob were members of the Elks Club and the Cleveland Country Club. They were members of Central United Methodist Church for many many years. Doris was an active member of The Shelby Junior Charity League. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. She also participated in numerous bridge clubs over quite a number of years.

Her family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, where she received excellent care and an abundance of love. Sincere gratitude is also extended to Hospice of Cleveland County.

Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, January 18th at 3pm in the Chapel of The Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home in Shelby with Dr. Joe Collins officiating. The family will receive friends at 2pm prior to the funeral service. Burial will immediately follow at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby, NC.
