Douglas John Hennel

Douglas John Hennel of Kings Mountain passed away Monday, March 30, 2015 at Carolinas Medical Center - Cleveland. He was born July 31, 1945 in Schenectady, NY to the late Edmund and Stephania Lewkowicz Hennel. He was a 1963 graduate of Mont Pleasant High School in Schenectady and after received a degree in Horticulture from S.U.N.Y Cobleskill. Following college, he partnered with his father and brother and opened the former Stadium Country Club in Schenectady. In addition to being superintendent he was responsible for the design, reconstruction and expansion of the original course layout. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northeastern Golf Course Superintendents Association in 1997. In his free time prior to his retirement, Douglas was an avid snowmobiler and enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with friends and family at his home on the Great Sacandaga Lake in the Adirondacks. After retiring in 2006, he moved to Moss Lake in Kings Mountain, NC and dedicated his time to enjoying life on the lake with many new friends. In addition to his parents, Douglas was predeceased by his brother Roger.

Douglas is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie (Palmatier); son Brian of Mayfield, NY; daughter Jennifer and husband William Fredenburg of Glenville, NY; grandsons Jordan and Zachary of Glenville; stepmother Hazel of Virginia and countless family and friends.

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory from 2:00pm - 4:00pm.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in New York.
