Dr. Alvin Mills Sherlin

Dr. Alvin Mills Sherlin, 96, of Shelby, passed away Sunday, July 10, 2016
at his home.

He was born on January 13, 1920, in Rutherford County, to the late Avenor
Alvin Sherlin and Elsie Emma Deane Sherlin. Dr. Sherlin was retired from
public education after serving as principal of Lake Lure High School, Casar
Elementary, Elizabeth Elementary and finally as vice president from
Cleveland Community College. He was an honorary member of Gamma Beta Phi
Society and a past member of Shelby Amateau Radio Club. He was also a
member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday school
teacher, member of the Board of Trustee and the Witness and Outreach
Committee and had formerly sang in the choir, and chaired the pastor
parrish committee. Dr. Sherlin was also a former member of Casar Baptist
Church where he was a former Sunday school teacher and he was also a former
member of Elizabeth Town Baptist Church. Dr. Sherlin served with the US Air
Force during World War II in the European Theater.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife,
Margaret Beason Sherlin; infant son, Jerry Lee Sherlin; step brother; Robert
Sherlin; and step sisters, Elizabeth Westmoreland and Martha Randall.

He is survived by his second wife, Virginia Carpenter Finley Sherlin;
daughter, Laura Jones of Ellenboro; two step daughters, Jacqueline "Jackie"
Ring of Cary and Brenda Warlick and husband, David of Raleigh; two
grandchildren, Tammy Carter and husband, Scott of Ellenboro and Bobbie
Walker and husband, Jimmy of Ellenboro; four great grandchildren, Clay and
Austin Bowling, Brandon Carter and Brooke Carter Stewart; nine step
grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; four step great great
grandchildren; and two step sisters, Susie Chambers of Salisbury and Betty
McNair of Troy.

Visitation will be 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday at Stamey-Tysinger Funeral
Home

A funeral service will be 2:00 PM, Thursday at Bethlehem United Methodist
Church with Rev. Bill Taylor and Rev. Randi Godfrey officiating.

Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park, Boiling Springs
