Dr. Bobby Gilmer Moss

"Death of a Modern Renaissance Man"

Dr. Bobby Gilmer Moss, 83, 519 Batchelor Drive, Blacksburg, SC, died August 7, 2015, at home. He was the husband of Catherine Bowen Moss, and was the son of the late Gilmer Moss and Mabel Batchelor Moss Pruett and the step-son of the late Carnel Pruett.

In addition to his loving wife, Catherine, he is survived by his daughter, Nina Moss Hutchins, his son-in-law, Keith L. Hutchins, Jr., and his grandchildren, Keith L. Hutchins, III, and Amanda L. Hutchins all of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

He was a 1950 graduate of Blacksburg High School; studied two years at Mars Hill; received a Bachelor Degree from Wake Forest; Louisville Baptist Seminary; received Master's Degree from the University of Virginia; and received a Doctorate form the University of St. Andrews, St. Andrew, Scotland.

Dr. Moss was a preacher - serving at North Pamunkey Baptist Church, Orange, VA, and served as an interim pastor at several churches in Cherokee County. He was a teacher - teaching history at Fork Union Military Academy to Professor Emeritus at Limestone College. He was a farmer who raised angus beef cattle. He authored over 26 books and co-authored several others. He was considered to be an American Expert on the Southern Campaigns of the American Revolution. He was also, once upon a time, a beekeeper.

He was Founder of Cherokee County Historical Preservation Society(C.H.A.P.S); served as historian for Broad River Baptist Association; was active in starting CKC Volunteer Fire Station and served as a fireman; served as a member of the committee for the celebration of the Gaffney Post Office's 100th anniversary; was a member of Crustbreakers; was once active in the Rotary Club; worked with the National Park Service in making the segment about the Battle of Kings Mountain for the History Channel.

He received an Honorary Doctorate from Limestone College; received the highest award for research and preserving military and family records from Colonial Dames of America; received the highest award for important Revolution War research from Daughters of American Revolution; received Keeper of the Culture by York County Cultural and Heritage Commission; was named the first Historian of Cherokee County; received the Order of Palmetto Award from Governor Mark Sanford for the State of South Carolina, which is the highest civilian award for contribution to the people and the State; and many other honors and awards.

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 13, 2015, from 6-7:00 PM, at Hopewell Baptist Church. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will begin at 7:00 PM with Rev. Eddie Bolin officiating and others assisting. At other times, they will be at the home.
