Dr. James H. Burrus

Dr. James H. Burrus age 83, died Saturday, May 7, 2016 at his home in Morganton. Born June 19, 1932 he was the son of the late Roy Grady and Lilly Vernon Burrus. He attended Mooresboro School and Mars Hill College, and then received both the BS and MD degrees at UNC Chapel Hill. Internship at Rex Hospital was followed by residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at NC Memorial Hospital. Pathology training was at Watts Hospital, Durham. Military service included both the US Naval Reserve and the US Army Medical Corps. He held the rank of Captain and served at 10th Evacuation Hospital and surgeon in a MASH unit in Wurzburg, Germany, during the Cold War. Returning to Shelby, he practiced Ob-Gyn, member of ACOG, ACOEM, Medical Societies of Cleveland County and American Medical Association, and numerous other groups. He was Clinical Assistant Professor of Ob-Gyn at UNC School of Medicine, founding member of the Ross and RARE Societies, and Board Member of American Medical Association, senior director of the original M&J Finance Company, Northwestern Insurance Co., American Association of Senior Physicians, North Lake Club, and others. He founded Medical Resources Consulting. Service on community boards included Cleveland Regional Medical Center Foundation, Life Enrichment Center, original member and Medical Director for the Alliance for Health, among many others. A staunch conservative, he enjoyed family, travel, the shooting sports, and literature. In addition to his parents, Dr. Burros is preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Roy G. Burros Jr.; a sister, Dorothy Burros and her husband Edward Pipkins, Sr., and a brother-in-law, B. H. Glyph.

Dr. Burrus is survived by his wonderful wife of 60 years, Maude Blanton Burrus; three sons, James

"Chip" Burrus Jr. and Sybil of San Diego Ca., Alan Burrus and wife Melissa of Charlotte; Erik Burrus and wife Beth of Raleigh; eight grandchildren, Megan Burrus Masters and husband Rob, Meredith Burrus, Hayley Burrus Rogers and husband Ted, James H. "Jack" Burrus III, Anderson Burrus, Adrian Robinson, Parker Burrus, Wynn Burrus; two great grandchildren, Lawton Masters and Lila Rogers; and a sister, Marie "Babs" Burrus Glymph of Fair Play, SC.

He was an enthusiastic member of the Cleveland County Medical Community and was the first to meet thousands of new residents by helping them into the world. Dr. Burrus never turned away a patient, and was a kind and compassionate Doctor. Dr. Burrus was a loving, devoted husband, a great father, but excelled at being a grandfather. He leaves a lasting legacy in our family and will be deeply missed.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 11:00 am at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Len Byers officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
