Dr. Jerry Francis Jackson
 Dr.  Jerry Francis Jackson, 72, of Shelby, NC passed away on Saturday, April 2, at Mecklenburg Healthcare Center in Charlotte.  Dr. Jackson, the only child born to Arthur West and Eugenia Bordeaux Jackson, was born on October 1, 1938.

Dr. Jackson grew up in his beloved Clinton, NC and was proud to be a Dark Horse and a graduate of Clinton HS.  He received his AA degree from Mars Hill College, his BA and Master’s degrees from Southern Illinois University and his doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of South Carolina.

Dr. Jackson began his career as a professor and then administrator at Campbell University.  Most of his career was in the area of fundraising for Wingate University, the then named Foreign Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, Samford University and Mars Hill College.  He served as President of Chowan University from 1989 to 1995, during which time he led Chowan in returning to a four-year college after having been a junior college for a number of years.

His parents predeceased him, but Dr. Jackson is survived by his wife of more than fifty years, Carolyn; his son Jerry West Jackson and wife Kandi of Charlotte; his daughter Jami Jackson Farris and husband Bryan of Cramerton; and the grandchildren who were so very special to him, Kameron Jackson, Bryant Jackson, Jackson Farris and Wynn Farris.  Other survivors include a number of Jackson and Bordeaux cousins, nieces and nephews and other family members as well as many dear friends.

A memorial service will be held at Shelby Presbyterian Church at 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 7, followed by a reception at the church for receiving family and friends.  There will be a graveside service on Saturday, April 9, at 11:00 am at Concord Baptist Church in Autryville, NC, followed by lunch for all.

Among Jerry’s greatest loves and interests were his Christian faith, his family, the Tarheels, NC barbecue and great family Monopoly matches.  He once played in a national Monopoly tournament hosted by the Hasbro Company.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jerry F. and Carolyn L. Jackson scholarship at Mars Hill College, 100 Athletic Street, Mars Hill, NC 28754; the Jackson Scholarship at Campbell University , P O Box 567, Buies Creek, NC, 27506  which is named for Jerry’s grandparents; or a memorial of one’s choice.

The family expresses appreciation to the many people who were involved in Dr. Jackson’s care during these past eight months.
