Dr. John Charles McGill

Dr. John Charles McGill, age 92, resident of 703 Hillside Drive, Kings Mountain, NC died November 11, 2014 at his home.  He was born in Clover, SC to the late Waldo Knox McGill, Sr. and Elsie Sullivan McGill.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Kenneth H. McGill and W. K. McGill, Jr.

 In 1943 John was graduated from Erskine College and then Vanderbilt University Medical School.  He served in the United States Army during World War II as a public health officer in Kobe, Japan.  In 1952 Dr. McGill located in Kings Mountain and began attending Boyce Memorial ARP Church where he served as Elder and faithful long-time member. He was the owner of the McGill Clinic, Kings Mountain, serving the community as a family physician for over 42 years.  “Dr. John”, as he was known, loved his patients and was known for his compassionate care and gentle nature.  He delivered over 2,000 babies, cared for entire families and made house calls on a regular basis during his career.

Dr. John was a many of interests, including walking his beloved farmland in York and Cherokee Counties; traveling to Erskine College to watch “Flying Fleet” basketball games; participating in Rotary Club activities; serving on the Board of Trustees of Erskine College; and, in his later years, going out to dinner with his friends “The Rowdy Boys”.  He was devoted to the Kings Mountain community, and served for 53 years on the Board of Directors of Kings Mountain Savings & Loan (now Bank of the Ozarks), where he was elected President and Chairman of the Board during his tenure.  One of Dr. McGill’s other loves was studying family history and attending McGill Reunions at Bethany ARP Church.  Posthumously, he will publish a new edition of the McGill Family History.

 Daughters: Frances Sullivan McGill, Salisbury, NC

  Meredith Jane McGill, Cary, NC

 Elizabeth McGill Cross and husband Robert, “Rob”, Midlothian, VA

Sister: Elsie McGill Tinkler, Greenwood, SC; Sister-in-law: Nancy T. McGill, Hypoluxo, Florida

6 Grandchildren: Carmen McGill, Pressly McGill, Caroline Cross, Sara Sullivan Cross, Robert Cross, and Catherine Cross.

        

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Boyce Memorial ARP Church, Saturday, November 15, 2014  11:00 A.M.  Rev. Nick Napier and Rev. Doug Petersen, officiating.

VISITATION: 4:00 – 6:00 P.M.  Friday evening, November 14, 2014 at Harris

Funeral Home, Kings Mountain, North Carolina

 

INTERMENT: Woodside Cemetery, Clover, South Carolina
