Echoes & Voices: New Book to Debut

Echoes & Voices: New Book by the The Carolina Scribes will debut at Art Walk on October 6th.
The legacy project of the The Carolina Scribes (affiliate member of the Cleveland County Arts Council) showcases the unique points of view of 16 native sons and daughters. The book includes personal interviews from Dr. James Petty, first president of Cleveland Community College, Les Roark our great city's former mayor, and retired Chicago Cub and local baseball legend, Ralph Dixon to name a few.
The book is split into three different sections: A compilation of interviews interspersed with family photos, a tapestry of short stories which include everything from farming practices of days gone by, ("Wheat Thrashers" by Alice Cummins), to a "Reminiscing" of Shelby during it's hay day delivered by Brendan LeGrand during the 40th class reunion of Shelby High School. In the back of the book is a compilation of poems including a lament for the vanished mills written by Gene Cox.
The project also includes CDs with audio recordings of the interviewees, which will be available to the public at the Cleveland Community College Library. Contact Barbara McKibben, Dean of Learning Resources for more information.
The Carolina Scribes and volunteers, who worked on this project, hope you will stop by our booth for the book's debut during the Art Walk celebration at the Cleveland County Arts Council on October 6th, 2016. Books are $12.00 a copy. We encourage you to come learn about our rich history and share your own stories with us.
