Edith M. White

Edith M. White died peacefully on November 26th, 2016. As her last hours closed in, her family was comforted, as she suddenly seemed to be delighted by the presence of angels, family and friends who have gone before her. She was radiant as she finally ended her courageous and long battle with Alzheimer's. Her lifelong Christian faith provides peace and joy that she is now healed and happy to be with the Lord and loved ones in heaven. Her family is comforted by all these things, but miss her deeply.

Edith, affectionately known as Dede and Edie by her beloved grandchildren, was born, raised and educated in Shelby. Just after World War II, she married Robert Archie White. Edith was known by all for her grace, elegance and beauty. During the golden years of textiles in North Carolina, her style and grace were recognized by manufacturers and clothing companies who hired her as a model. While raising her children, Barbara and David, Edith was actively involved in the family construction business, modeling, and volunteering for civic organizations, but her true passion and purpose were being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother while turning homemaking into an art. In addition to her devotion to her family, her genuine love and care for others made her admired and appreciated by all who knew her. She never seemed aware that she was so naturally beautiful, not only outwardly, but also beautiful, was her kind, generous, giving heart. Family and friends would gather to spend time in her comfortable, friendly home every single day. They came not just for her welcoming spirit and comforting strength; they also came for her wit, charm and dessert-of-the-day. Her delicious food and southern hospitality were famous! Everyone left feeling uplifted and happier after spending time with this amazing, gracious, unselfish lady, who tirelessly always put the well-being of others before herself. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Elgie Mode, Archie White, her husband of 47 years, Ralph Walters, her companion for 15 more years, her three brothers, as well as many other relatives and special friends.

Surviving are her children Barbara McKay and husband Mike of Charlotte, and David White and wife Lisa of Shelby; grandchildren; Dana Scoggin and Dave (Tonya) White of Shelby, Elizabeth (Brett) Lesley of Atlanta, GA and Michael Stutts of Dallas, Texas, and great grandchildren; Guy Scoggin and Tyler Allen of Shelby, and Reid, Jane and Brooks Lesley of Atlanta, GA.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude for the compassionate and loving care shown by Sterling House, Carillon and Hospice of Cleveland County.

A service to celebrate Edith's life will be held in the main sanctuary of The First Baptist Church of Shelby at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 30th with a reception and visitation following the service in the Dover Activity Building.
