Edwin Keith "Butch" Long, Jr., 75, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2016 at CaroMont Regional Medical Center, Gastonia, NC. Butch was born on November 23, 1941 to the late Edwin Keith Long, Sr. and Velma Ruth Quinn Long of Cherryville, NC. He is survived by his wife, Renna Sue Harrelson Long of Cherryville, NC. Also surviving are his children, Bryan Keith Long, Kings Mountain, NC, (wife-Leigh Ann, daughter-Kristen{husband-Joe}); Robert Bradley Long of Cherryville, NC (wife-Angie, daughter-Taylor, son-Randall); Susan Renee Long (fiancée-David, daughters-Blair{fiancée-Alex} and Carmen); and his brother, Joel M. Long of Greensboro, NC (wife-Ann, his children-Preston and Zackary). He is preceded in death by a sister Diana Long Dellinger.
He was a life-long member of First Presbyterian, Cherryville, NC. He served in many church capacities: Deacon, Ruling Elder, Church Choir Member since the age of 12, Director of Presbyterian Youth Fellowship, Member-Men's Bible Class, Sunday School class Teacher. The congregation honored him with the status of Elder Emeritus.
In addition to his church activities he served the Cherryville community in the following ways: President of the Optimist Club, Pop Warner Football Coach, Co-Founder-Long's Heating and Air Conditioning.
A graduate of Cherryville High School, he was an All-Conference athlete, lettered in three (3) sports-Baseball, Basketball, and Football. He was the 1960 Governor's Youth Fitness Award recipient.
Visitation for friends will be held in the First Presbyterian (Cherryville, NC) Fellowship Hall from 4-6 PM followed by a memorial service in the church sanctuary to celebrate Butch's life at 6:30 PM, January 3, 2017. The church is located at 107 W. Academy St., Cherryville, NC.
