Elizabeth Elene ”Betsy” Martin

Elizabeth Elene ”Betsy” Martin, 23, was received into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center.  Born in Shelby on November 25, 1989, Betsy was the beloved daughter of Tom and Mimi Stanley Martin.  She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, T.W. “Casey” Martin and George Alexander Stanley.

Betsy was currently enrolled at the University of North Carolina – Greensboro, a 2012 graduate of Wake Forest University with a B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Spanish, and a 2008 graduate of Shelby High School, where she was an honors student and president of the senior class. She especially enjoyed her membership in the many honors organizations at Shelby High School because they afforded her the opportunity to serve her community. She spent many hours volunteering at Hospice Cleveland County. She attended the NC Governor’s School and Presidential Classroom in Washington, DC. A violinist since childhood, she was in the Shelby High School Orchestra’s first violin section and was selected to participate in the NC All-State Honors Orchestra. She was an avid athlete who loved most of all being on a team. She played many sports and was a beloved member of the tennis and soccer teams at Shelby High School. She was a state 2A champion in doubles tennis and qualified for the All-State Tennis Team throughout high school. She represented North Carolina in 2007 on the Southern Junior Cup Team. She played USTA tennis at various levels throughout her life. As a member of the varsity soccer team, she was Defensive MVP and recipient of the Coach’s Award, and she was a former Classic level soccer player. She was a lifelong member of Shelby Presbyterian Church, where she was an active participant in the church youth group. She went on many mission trips, both locally and abroad. She especially enjoyed her five summers at Camp Broadstone. Betsy cherished so many rich friendships in her life. At Wake Forest, she was a devoted sister of Kappa Delta Sorority, serving as Vice President. She participated in student government, the Christian Medical/Dental Association, and the Wake Forest University Orchestra. She also volunteered at the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, among other locations, and was the captain of the Club Tennis team. She spent a summer abroad in Spain at the University of Salamanca, where she worked at the Oncology Department of the University Hospital. She was currently employed with Arbor Pediatrics as a Medical Scribe in Winston-Salem for Dr. Ticia Kribbs.

Betsy is survived by her loving parents, Thomas W. Martin, Jr. and Mimi Stanley Martin; brother, Thomas Alexander “Alex” Martin; grandmothers, Elene Conner Martin of Lattimore and Betty Stackhouse Stanley of Columbia, SC; aunts, Susan A. Martin (Alan) of Winston-Salem; Melissa Stanley Port (Ronald) and son Alan of Columbia, SC; and a myriad of extended family and friends whom she loved dearly.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00pm on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Shelby Presbyterian Church.  Dr. Luke Harkey will be officiating.  A gathering of friends will immediately follow the service in Ellis Hall at the church.  Please follow the service at the following link:
