Exchange Club Honors Jacob Boyd With A.C.E. Award

The Exchange Club of Shelby honored Jacob Boyd as the A.C.E. Award winner for Kings Mountain High School.  The A.C.E. Award recognizes high school seniors that have Accepted the Challenge of Excellence.  A.C.E. Award winners have overcome a personal or physical adversity that could have been used as an excuse to fail, but instead the student chose to work hard and succeed.

In eighth grade Boyd found out he had a rare spinal disease.  He lost 65% of his range of movement.   He had surgery and had to wear a neck and back brace during ninth grade and still has only limited movement in his spine.  After graduation, Boyd plans to attend Appalachian State or UNC-G and pursue a degree in biology and go to medical school.

Attending the meeting with him were his parents, Greg and Lisa Boyd, and math teacher, Mary Ann Lattimore.  Mrs. Lattimore spoke about Boyd’s commitment to his education.  She said, “He has kept a positive attitude and wants to learn.  He also volunteers in the community and tutors other students.”

The Exchange Club presented Boyd with a certificate of recognition and $200.

The A.C.E. Award is a program of the National Exchange Club.  The Exchange Club of Shelby is a civic club serving all of Cleveland County.  Club members volunteer to make our community a better place to live through service programs in Americanism, Community Service, Youth Activities, and the Prevention of Child Abuse.  Exchange meets at 6:30pm on the second and fourth Monday of each month at Jackson’s Cafeteria in Shelby.
