First Thursday Celebrates 20th Year
First Thursday -- Lunch with Susan will be celebrating its twentieth year.  This is a Shelby institution that is barely noticed, but one that draws many  women and men each month to Central Methodist Church for a community  gathering for lunch and a study of the Bible.

First Thursday was first conceived by adult sponsors of Young Life when Susan Bell expressed her desire to teach from the Bible.  The teacher is Susan Carlisle  Bell,  an art instructor at Gardner-Webb University. She also has a masters  degree in Christian education. These two interests tie together as a unique audio-visual presentation of inspirational Bible teaching.  Those who attend say:  “It was a blessing!”

Twenty years ago Kelly Fleming, wife of the Young Life Area Director, took the initiative to provide the homemade lunch for three dollars apiece.   Central United Methodist Church freely welcomed the event to meet in their fellowship hall.  Publicity was managed by placing notices in  the newspaper and in church bulletins. Helen Gilliatt has been managing reservations and the meal.   Kathy Brenneman was responsible for nursery care.

Betty Bowling and a cadre of telephoners have called to remind people each month.  Other publicity is provided in the newspaper and  church bulletins.  We plan to expand our publicity venues through email, television, and personal invitation in order to welcome more people to this event.

First Thursday is named for the date and lunch is noontime to one o’clock. Mothers of young children those on lunch break will appreciate that Susan begins the teaching at 12:10 and finishes by 12:50 p.m.

There is no “homework,”  no  membership, and lunch is optional at $4.00.  **Reservations are required for the lunch and nursery care**   You are invited to “come as you are” with your Bible. Phone Helen Gilliatt at 704-482-5789 to reserve your place and for information.  The first study will be Sept. 2, the First Thursday.
