Free Astronomy Program
The Cleveland County Astronomical Society (CCAS) will host the 22nd annual Regional Meeting of Amateur Astronomers on Saturday, January 25th, 2014 at the Tucker Student Center at Gardner-Webb University. This FREE event opens at 8:00 a.m. with the program beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. The event will feature speakers, astrophotography displays, swap tables, prize drawings, fellowship with amateur and professional astronomers from the region, and a chance to find out about local events and facilities. As well, there will be Solar observing during lunch, weather permitting.
The 2014 event includes the presentation “Getting Started with Amateur Astronomy”.  This session will cater specifically to people interested in learning more about Astronomy and how to get started in the hobby. Topics such as common terms, telescope and other equipment choices, and other resources to help you get started will be covered. CCAS and other regional club members will also be available to answer beginner questions in a Q&A panel. This will be educational for adults and kids and is part of our new initiative to increase public outreach in Cleveland County in 2014.
This year’s gathering will feature an astrophotography and astronomical art display.  Attendees are encouraged to bring items to display. Entries may be print, digital, or drawings.
Anyone with an interest in astronomy is welcome to attend all or part of this annual meeting. Beginners of all ages are especially urged to come and ask questions of more experienced amateurs. This meeting has always been an informal exchange between regional friends from astronomy clubs from the Piedmont, NC and beyond. Admission is free.
CCAS will also be sharing some exciting news about changes for our Club in 2014.   These changes include a new monthly meeting location and time, along with some new partnerships for public outreach in Cleveland County. More details to be provided at the Regional Meeting and via our website in the coming weeks.
Contact David Herndon for more information on the 2014 Regional Meeting (see below).   The CCAS has traditionally held monthly club meetings at the Williams Observatory at Gardner-Webb University on the fourth Thursday of each month at 7:30 P.M.  GWU has been a generous partner and host to our organization and we look forward to continuing that partnership with events at Williams Observatory in 2014 and beyond.
In 2014 we will be changing our monthly meeting location and time to better logistically accommodate our existing and potential new members:
Our meeting date will move to the THIRD Thursday of each month. January 16th will be the first meeting of 2014.
Our plans are to meet at a location near Shelby, NC. We are still finalizing our location and will announce this soon. Keep an eye on www.ccastro.org for more information.
Meeting times will shift to 7:00 with doors open at 6:30.
